Our goal is to turn every warrior to a long term survivor in Nigeria and beyond.
Nash Foundation was founded after I, Natu Suzie Kure, lost seven family members to cancer. In 2019, I found out that two of my aunts had stage 4 breast cancer, both of which could have been detected earlier. I advocate for early detection because it could have saved many women, including my relatives. My aunt might still be here today if she had followed medical advice, if there hadn’t been fear or stigma associated with the disease, and if there had been more awareness and education about her situation. I aim to ensure that no woman has to endure what she went through.
In October 2023, our outreach initiative reached new milestones with two impactful events. On October 27th, we hosted a screening day in Kaduna North, and on October 20th, we conducted a similar outreach in Kaduna South. Over these two days, we screened 123 women, offering essential services such as ultrasounds and mammograms. A total of 26 ultrasounds and 38 mammograms were performed, and 5 biopsies were conducted. Unfortunately, two women were diagnosed with breast cancer, but, despite our best efforts to guide them, both chose to decline treatment.
Despite these challenges, we remained committed to our cause and set our sights on even greater goals in 2024. Our February and October outreach events broke all previous records. Our goal to screen 1,000 women in 2024 was not only met but surpassed, thanks to the dedication of our medical team and the trust of the communities we serve.
The February 2024 outreach, held on February 9th and 10th at Yusuf DanTsoho General Hospital, was a remarkable success. During these two days, we screened 183 women, providing 75 ultrasounds and 48 mammograms. In addition, 5 Tru-Cut biopsies and 6 excision biopsies were performed. Through these screenings, we identified 5 women with breast cancer. While 3 of them declined treatment, two women made the brave decision to proceed with their treatment plans.
One of the women who chose treatment has already undergone 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a successful mastectomy. Her journey has been one of perseverance and strength, and she is now on the path to recovery. The second woman, who had started her treatment later than expected due to being pregnant at the time of her diagnosis, is now in her third round of chemotherapy. Her courage and determination are truly inspiring as she continues her battle with the support of her loved ones and our team.
These stories remind us that every screening and every diagnosis is an opportunity to offer care, guidance, and hope. Our outreach events continue to make a difference, one woman at a time, as we work together to raise awareness, provide early detection, and empower women to take control of their health.
Mrs. Sarah, a 32-year-old woman from Kwoi, is one of our success stories. Initially, she was hesitant to proceed with treatment, but after a conversation with our convener, she decided to move forward. She has undergone a mastectomy, completed six rounds of chemotherapy, and is currently receiving hormonal therapy.
The patient is on her third round of chemotherapy. She started treatment later than usual because she was pregnant at the time of her diagnosis.
